Gloria Osteria, Milan – Nulty Lighting Design
The newly inaugurated restaurant, Gloria Osteria is the latest opening from restauranteurs Big Mamma, situated along Via Tivoli in Milan’s sophisticated Brera district, boasts a captivating design narrative crafted by the in-house design team. The design itself exudes a distinct character, characterized by its bold utilization of color and materials. To complement the Italian-inspired villa-like interior, a carefully selected lighting scheme was implemented to augment the lively atmosphere and highlight the decorative elements of the design.
The exterior facade is adorned with glazing that is framed by lines of light, creating a gentle glow that evokes a welcoming sensation. Upon entering the restaurant, visitors are greeted by a series of layers of detail, including luxurious fabrics, reflective surfaces, and artistic features. The lighting was thoughtfully integrated into the architecture, with directional spotlights strategically placed to provide a comfortable layer of illumination that enhances the ambiance. The centerpiece of the dining area is a collection of chandeliers that elegantly traverse the space, adding texture, movement, and a touch of glamour.
The exterior is further accentuated by concealed lines of light that softly illuminate the facade, creating an inviting atmosphere. Inside, the design unfolds with layers of detail, including sumptuous fabrics, reflective surfaces, and artistic elements. The lighting was designed to be seamlessly integrated into the architecture, with directional spotlights carefully positioned to ensure a comfortable level of ambient light that enhances the overall mood. The main highlight of the space is a series of chandeliers that elegantly drape from the ceiling, adding a sense of texture, movement, and sophistication.
The design also features concealed lines of light that gently highlight the mirrored arches that intermittently divide the space. Each arch is complemented by a decorative wall sconce, which not only adds to the aesthetic rhythm but also directs light back onto the reflective surfaces, enhancing their beauty. At the back of the restaurant, the design’s focus on curved lines is further emphasized, with illuminated mirrors guiding guests towards the dining area’s focal point.
Central to the ground floor dining area is the grand bar, which is adorned with a riot of trailing yellow flowers, statement artwork, and reflective surfaces. The lighting was meticulously integrated to preserve the design aesthetic, utilizing a combination of joinery lighting and carefully positioned uplights. This lighting scheme not only illuminates the shelves but also adds visual emphasis, creating a subtle yet dynamic effect. To further enhance the dramatic impact, the concealed lighting sources interact with the bottles and mirrored surfaces, producing a sparkle and intensity that adds to the overall ambiance.
On the mezzanine level, the design continues to be highlighted by concealed lines of light that trace the curvature of the banquet seating, accentuating the soft furnishings. Battery-powered table lamps are strategically placed to allow for adjustments in light levels throughout the evening, seamlessly transitioning the atmosphere from bright to intimate.
